"Smalti is made by pouring glass onto a slab that is then formed into tortillas or pizzas, depending on where it's made, Mexico or Italy, respectively.  Traditionally, these are then cut into smaller square pieces to be used for mosaicing.  I like to take the broken tortillas that I receive from my supplier and use them as they are to create imagery that organically flows from these shapes.  These are the large focal pieces in the mosaics shown below."
